50 years of Securikey
Established in 1973, we are proudly celebrating our 50th anniversary this month. A trusted partner to companies across the UK, we’ve been providing our valued customers with high-quality security solutions for half a century. From humble beginnings to leading supplier of security solutions, we have seen significant growth over our 50 years of trading.
As original importers of Tipp-Ex, Securikey began in the office stationery industry before diversifying into different markets as the portfolio grew. From key cabinets and filing cabinets, we added to our range and made the new move into supplying the shipping industry as we were acquired by Turnbull Scott. In 1989, we became the UK distributor for Masterlock padlocks and added Freestanding safes to the then new EN1143-1 standard. Fast forward to today, our product portfolio is so diverse that we provide solutions to every industry.
As one of our longest standing employees, Karl Torgersen, Warehouse Operative, recently celebrated his 39th anniversary with Securikey. A valued member of the team, Karl shares his highlights from his long serving career.
Karl’s first day
Aged 27, Karl joined Securikey in 1984 as a Warehouse Operative. Joining one other team member in the warehouse, X showed Karl the ropes. Giving Karl the confidence he needed to carry on with the job at hand, X’s training allowed Karl to succeed and develop into the highly competent professional he is today. The Warehouse Team now consist of 4 members, highlighting the magnitude of growth across the business.
The change Karl has seen over the years
For Karl, the biggest change he’s seen in his career is with our product offering. From stocking only key cabinets, key reels and underfloor safes during the early years, Karl has seen our product offering diversify massively. In Karl’s own words, ‘we’ve gone sideways, upwards, we’ve just exploded’.
Karl’s favourite part of the job
As a Warehouse Operative, Karl’s favourite part of the job is when he’s able to showcase his abilities to work quickly and efficiently. When faced with a seemingly impossible task, Karl and his colleagues tackle urgent tasks with precision and speed in order to meet tight delivery deadlines. With owners Ian and Jeremy keeping the Warehouse team’s spirits high, Karl ends the day with a real sense of achievement and peace of mind knowing that’s another job done well.
Karl’s favourite memory
As an avid Everton supporter, Karl booked the day off to travel to London to see his team play against long-standing rivals Tottenham. However, on the day of the match, a large shipment arrived at the warehouse that required not only unloading by hand, but a same-day turn around. Dedicated to his work, Karl gave up his free time to support his colleague in the warehouse. To his amazement, the whole team rolled up their sleeves to ensure he got to see his team play; the Managing Director even drove him to the train station to make sure he didn’t miss his train. Karl has never forgotten the team’s act of kindness and with Everton taking home a win, the memory is even sweeter for him.
A time of celebration for the whole team at Securikey, we couldn’t be prouder of our achievements over the past 50 years. Here’s to many more years of continued growth and success.
