SECURIKEY ON TRACK IN LONDON
Leading UK safety and security supplier Securikey has achieved ‘Police Preferred Specification’ status for nine models within its convex safety mirror range, demonstrating that the company has met the high standards set by Secured by Design (SBD), a national Police crime prevention initiative. Securikey are proud to supply Duravision Stainless Steel Wall Dome mirrors to London Underground, the tube train network for London and the South East.
In 2003, TFL (Transport For London) experimented with piping classical music into stations on the London Underground with a view to reducing anti-social behaviour but, with 4 million passengers using London Underground every day – and 89.4 million people per year passing through Waterloo station alone, safety is paramount and a little more than Ravel is required! Rigorously tested to meet stringent UK, Home Office, London Metropolitan Police and The Prison Service regulations, Securikey’s convex, or safety, mirrors provide real-time surveillance for busy platforms and corridors and allow train drivers to view parts of the platform on their approach into a station, forewarning them of any hazards or persons who may be dangerously close to the track. Drivers say that, in terms of safety, the mirrors are invaluable and provide a clearer view of the platform than the monitors provided in most stations. In addition, the mirrors help platform staff to see into corners and other blind spots which would normally be hidden from view, increasing passenger safety and reducing vandalism, which is music to the ears of TFL’s busy staff and customers.
Manufactured from highly polished mirror grade Stainless Steel, the Wall Dome mirror’s curved surface maximises the viewing area for additional safety, making the mirror a virtually maintenance-free, long-lasting, unbreakable surveillance system and helping to keep London Underground a safe and pleasant way to travel. In fact, Securikey’s mirrors have become such an integral part of London Underground that they regularly appear as ‘art’ on sites such as Flickr and Instagram.
Alan McInnes, General Manager of Secured by Design said, ‘Securikey’s mirrors are a new category for Secured by Design and we fully support this type of innovative security product and look forward to seeing the expansion into further applications.’
Editor’s note: Secured by Design’s objective is to reduce burglary and crime in the UK by designing out crime through physical security and processes and their principles have been proven to achieve a reduction of crime risk by up to 75%, by combining minimum standards of physical security and well-tested principles of natural surveillance and defensible space.
